The theme of Women in Construction Week 2022 is "Envision Equity"

As we are all well aware by now, women make up a small fraction of the construction industry compared to their male counterparts. Lots can still be done to help close the gender gap and build more awareness around the amazing career opportunities in our industry. There is definitely momentum to support and hire women in construction, but many are still looking for ways to move the needle a bit faster. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this important topic! Take a minute to reply to our discussion topic and let other members know about the strides that your organization is taking to help women thrive. How have you seen things change for the better for women in the industry? What do you think needs to be done to attract more women to the industry? Do you have any inspiring stories of women advancing in construction? What are your personal successes or perceptions as it relates to this important topic?

Our company is a union contractor that has been in business for 74 years. We currently have more women working for us in the field than we have ever had. I believe men and women coming out of high school are seeing they can have a very successful livelihood by entering a construction trade. Five years of a paid apprenticeship with benefits may look more appealing to many vs. five years of an accumulated college student loan.

We have hired about 50% women, 50% men in our accounting department. It has been really good for our team!

At my workplace there is no distinction between genders. There are women in both office and field, in all levels.

I think to attract more women to the industry it needs to start in the high school. Show them the industry isn't just for men whether they want to enter the field or office there are endless opportunities available for them. Then provide them a mentor to guide them and show them the options available for them to excel.

I have definitely seen changes in the industry since starting in the construction industry 15 years ago. Women in leadership positions seem to show more appreciation for the employees. This is a great way to bring more productivity and talent to your business.

We need to stress to our daughters that not only are the trades a great career path but that they can be a great fit. As my daughter has just begun her freshman year in college for engineering, she is now seeing some of the appeal to the construction industry. As an accountant she finds sitting at a desk a boring job. She also thought that construction was not a fit for her but now sees the appeal of her field and how rewarding it can be working on a project. Being a part of the project from the start whether it is in the drawings and designing of the project seems to now be an exciting job. Career fairs at the college show that woman have just as much opportunity as men do. She wants to be the best/most efficient project manager one day not just a woman project manager.

I think the push to recruit more women in construction is key to solving the severe labor shortage in the industry. Kudos!
