Mentorship vs. Sponsorship

In a study by the National Center for Construction Research and Education, the findings point to the importance of sponsorship and that a lack of exposure and opportunities is holding women back. What women need to advance is someone in their corner advocating for the next move, giving them a high visibility project/tasks, and making the right introductions. Do you have a story or example of sponsorship?

I see opportunities being mentioned but I believe Sponsorship is when a person is given the opportunity to take on these key prodominately males roles and is supported in that role and given the guidance to succeed. Hold their hand, walk them through the hurdles and ensure they are going in the right direction to be the best at that position - That is what sponsorship should be.

Our company attends many industry related functions that provide the opportunity for female PMs to be introduced to the key players on the projects they are managing and in the industry.

I believe there are more and more examples of sponsorship every day in the workplace. Recognition has become more visible and opportunities to progress in their career have been evident.

At a previous construction company where I worked, I was in the Payroll position but would often take my own time to work with the Lead Estimator to bid projects for the experience. I overheard him talking about how qualified I was and how he would love to see the company move me into a role on his team. It meant a lot.

I don't have a personal story about mentorship or sponsorship. But I agree that it is more important to have someone who will take a chance on you and give you the chance to prove yourself than to just have a support person to talk to. Although that is helpful, too. Just not as likely to help move your career forward.

I do not have a sponsorship story but there is still a lot of discrimination against women in the construction field. I hope this changes some day because women have a lot to offer.

I do not have an example of sponsorship, but I can see how it can be very beneficial to a person's career. In addition, it has the opportunity to give a person a broader look at a career path that may send them in a direction they hadn't thought of before.

I believe that schooling is very important, then the advancement should follow through.

I don't have a story about sponsorship, but I believe it along with mentorship can take people in many directions to achieve their goals. If we all instill in ourselves these abilities to assist, we can make a much better work environment.
