Mentorship vs. Sponsorship

In a study by the National Center for Construction Research and Education, the findings point to the importance of sponsorship and that a lack of exposure and opportunities is holding women back. What women need to advance is someone in their corner advocating for the next move, giving them a high visibility project/tasks, and making the right introductions. Do you have a story or example of sponsorship?

I've observed an increasing number of women securing notable positions within the construction industry. It's truly encouraging to witness companies prioritizing this trend more frequently!

I don't have a personal story about sponsorship, but I can see how sponsorship is more helpful in advancing women in construction as it provides opportunities. I do think mentorship is important here too though because it pushes the person who wants the opportunity to go and get it for themselves.

I believe that sponsorship is outwardly helping people to receive recognition and advancement, while mentorship is personally, one-on-one, teaching a person how to hone their skills.

Coming up in my career there were not a lot of women role models. I have made it a point to mentor women coming in. I had not taken consideration of the difference of mentorship vs sponsorship and found this study enlightening. Our company is making strong efforts in partnering new hires with a mentor in their first month of on-boarding to help them feel appreciated and really learn the systems and culture.

I believe there are more and more examples of sponsorship every day in the workplace. Recognition has become more visible and opportunities to progress in their career have been evident.

I currently do not have a story of my own to share. However, I think you need both mentorship and sponsorship.

Mentoring provides guidance and support, while sponsorship advocates for advancement. Both are essential for supporting women in construction. Companies should prioritize implementing programs that offer both mentoring and sponsorship opportunities to help women succeed in the industry.

I don't have any sponsorship examples, but we are in a construction company that's is full of women who are always willing to learn. If the opportunity was there for us to move up and learn more skills we would take it.
