Mentorship vs. Sponsorship

In a study by the National Center for Construction Research and Education, the findings point to the importance of sponsorship and that a lack of exposure and opportunities is holding women back. What women need to advance is someone in their corner advocating for the next move, giving them a high visibility project/tasks, and making the right introductions. Do you have a story or example of sponsorship?

Being in an accounting role and having worked in many industries prior to construction, I can honestly say that there is an unfortunate lack of sponsorship out there. Often times it can be due to the fact that there isn't enough bandwidth to take on that responsibility. Companies should really take the time to develop their employees. It benefits the company greatly and it shows the employee that they are a valuable asset.

From an office perspective, I have been fortunate enough to have great female mentors and that itself has provided tremendous opportunity within my company. I do believe that sponsorship is so important for women in the field and job facing roles. I can't help but get a little excited when we hire women for our trades. In my head there's always a little "Go crush it, girl!"

I am new to the construction business and I have been learning more than ever. In my organization there are essential women in leadership positions. I have a lot of respect from my coworkers and the work environment among field and office are absolutely great and of teamwork. We complement each other. Lots of admiration to the Staff members to keep us safe and with a sense of family. Women here are very valued and area ll excited to work for the company. I certainly feel validated and honored here.

Mentorship is much more of an inward facing action to help grow skills where sponsorship is much more outward facing and includes advocating and speaking up for someone in a room that they are not in.

I have seen companies sponsor women to become PM's or join the union if they want to be in the trades. It's great to see women have choices.

I believe there are more and more examples of sponsorship every day in the workplace. Recognition has become more visible and opportunities to progress in their career have been evident.
