Mentorship vs. Sponsorship

In a study by the National Center for Construction Research and Education, the findings point to the importance of sponsorship and that a lack of exposure and opportunities is holding women back. What women need to advance is someone in their corner advocating for the next move, giving them a high visibility project/tasks, and making the right introductions. Do you have a story or example of sponsorship?

Yeah there's definitely a difference between the two. Sure I can show you how to do a new task or provide feedback on something, but unless I'm trying to open any doors (or at least a window...) for you when the opportunity arises, I'm essentially holding you back.

I completely agree with Maggie Padilla, the impact needs to come from those in leadership positions. Without their buy in the sponsorship plans will fizzle out unfortunately.

Yes for sure. Mentorship can really help in a lot of different ways.

There is a definite distinction between mentorship and sponsorship. I believe there are many examples of sponsorship every day from peers and forward thinking innovators. But, unfortunately, the greatest impact still needs to come from a supervisor or higher ranking individual to truly open those doors.

I think it's important to give women a chance, especially since it's a job mostly dominated by men!

I believe there is a lot of examples of sponsorship in our company. There are a lot of advocates and people to encourage and teach women. I've seen more women being hired for more prominent roles in the construction industry.

I do not have an example of sponsorship but after reading the article, there is definitely a difference between mentorship and sponsorship. I think the shift in mindset is key for women to advance in a male dominated industry.

I am not sure if we have a sponsorship program but giving woman more opportunities to progress in their career is important.

We do not do a formal sponsorship program at my company however, I think that this could be an important step in equality and getting visibility on women for leadership roles.

I have witnessed companies sponsor women to become leaders if they want to be in the office and in the trades. Choices seem to be a key in promoting opportunities.
