There's Never Been a Better Time to Celebrate Women in Construction

With an extreme lack of skilled workers in the construction industry, there's never been a more important time to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. In this For Construction Pros article, they list some things that could change the way women feel about careers in construction and attract them to our great industry. What are your thoughts? Is there anything you would add to their list?

Maybe things have changed since I was in school, but construction/trade classes weren't pushed in high school so girls didn't take them; those classes were "for the boys." If high schools would focus on the fact that women can and should be in the construction industry more girls would be drawn to that career path.

I thought the article was great! It is taking a long time, but the industry is finally realizing how powerful women can be to their organization. A company can become stronger by expanding their workforce and truly listening to all ideas.

One thing that wasn't mentioned in the article is maternity leave and light duty during pregnancy if it is needed. Also, finding a pumping location can be a challenge at job sites. Our industry has a long way to go with equity in this regard, especially when you look at occupations that are dominated by women (teaching, nursing, etc.).

Having a women to women mentorship program is helpful too. It doesn't need to be formal. Just an informal (safe) place to get help and support can really help younger women fit into the industry.

The list was good! I don't have anything to add but it would be nice to see more skilled workers in the industry including women.

Great list. Women add a wonderful dimension and perspective to the construction work world: hard work, multitasking, attention to detail, humanizing work - to name a few.

This was a good list. There is definitely affinity bias in the industry (and probably with most careers), where people with similar interests as the executives and directors seem like the most natural fit for a job. It can be intimidated to be a woman with different interests than the majority of your male counterparts. But being different means you have something unique to bring to the table, and you shouldn't be afraid of standing apart or having a voice. Don't sell yourself short, and give people an opportunity to know the real you!

I would add the importance of mentoring women in construction. I was lucky to have a female project manager that informally mentored me while I was starting out as a project engineer and now I pay it forward with other women in the industry as well.

I think it was a pretty good list. I think it can be intimidating for women since construction is male dominated, but training can be a great incentive to help bring them to certain positions and help them move up in the field.
