The theme of Women in Construction Week 2022 is "Envision Equity"

As we are all well aware by now, women make up a small fraction of the construction industry compared to their male counterparts. Lots can still be done to help close the gender gap and build more awareness around the amazing career opportunities in our industry. There is definitely momentum to support and hire women in construction, but many are still looking for ways to move the needle a bit faster. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this important topic! Take a minute to reply to our discussion topic and let other members know about the strides that your organization is taking to help women thrive. How have you seen things change for the better for women in the industry? What do you think needs to be done to attract more women to the industry? Do you have any inspiring stories of women advancing in construction? What are your personal successes or perceptions as it relates to this important topic?

Having women that work in construction tell their story and share positive experiences helps to attract more women. There are several groups that focus on this topic and promote women and we need to support their efforts.

Things are definitely changing for women within the construction industry. I know for my company alone we have increased our amount of woman in our workforce over the last 2-3 years by more than 20%. Things are going the right direction, we need to bridge that gender gap and make it known that things CAN be done by a woman.

Seeing girls enter the trades from opportunities they have been given in high school is strengthening every year. We are lucky enough to have strong women from entry level trade to VP and inbetween.

Though there is still progress to be made, I believe the acceptance of women in construction has progressed quite a bit from a decade, especially two decades ago. This is from my own observation from when I first entered the workforce to what I see now.

I have seen things change by graduating from a vocational high school and seeing girls study construction or welding. One thing to attract more women into the industry is to keep an open mind when you hire them. Don't make it in so they have to have special treatment when wanting to work in this field. I know many women who work in construction or are in the union making more money than you can think and it's amazing. I like to see women step out of their comfort zone and do something they truly love.

Just within my company, I've seen a lot more women hired in the last few years in the almost 8 years I've been here. Great strides!
