Sustainability should be incorporated into every business mission statement.

By adopting sustainable practices, businesses can reduce their environmental impact, save money, and improve their reputation. They can also create new market opportunities and position themselves for long-term success.

Long-term environmental health will have a direct influence on future profitability. I forsee that we will get to a point in the industry where the sustainability and profitability of a project is going to have to fight it out, as both sit on either side of the scale. The more you put enphasis on one the less results you are going to get out of the other.

For sustainability and profitability to work, there needs to be a common understanding and working ethic from all parties involved. From designing to execution of a project, the products being used, where they come from and the lifespan all need to be accounted for. Reducing carbon foot print would be a great place to start.

We can all make changes that are impactful...next time you "upgrade" an item, think about what happens to the old one, do you really need to add more to the system...

I also agree that long term sustainability and profitability will go hand in hand. I also think without incentives, it will be harder for companies to invest in long term sustainability if they are not already doing so.

We have done a lot of projects that are LEED certified, which is basically the same thing as lowering emissions, reducing waste, building a better building from "cleaner" materials. These projects have all cost more money, have used hard to source materials, have been paid for by tax payers...aka government grants and I have yet to see where the benefit is in any of this.
