Mentorship vs. Sponsorship

In a study by the National Center for Construction Research and Education, the findings point to the importance of sponsorship and that a lack of exposure and opportunities is holding women back. What women need to advance is someone in their corner advocating for the next move, giving them a high visibility project/tasks, and making the right introductions. Do you have a story or example of sponsorship?

Sometimes mentorship comes from unexpected places. I've been fortunate enough to have some very unusual yet impactful mentors.

The power dynamics of the relationship are the primary distinction between sponsorship and mentoring. Typically, sponsors are higher ranking officials within the company, whereas mentors can be at the same level but still have valuable experience.

I don't have any examples of sponsorship but believe that it should happen naturally.

We have many examples in our company where sponsorship has been key to the advancement of females in their roles. The sponsorship carries more commitment to be successful and is a long-lasting engagement.

I had never thought about the difference between a "mentorship" & a "sponsorship" before reading the info in the PDF. It was a very enlightening read. I enjoyed the story of Hal & Kendra, but I do question the authenticity of that story, seems like maybe it was embellished a bit. But I understand why it was presented that way, it needs to sound like a "super-successful" experience for the company involved in starting sponsorships, otherwise it could prevent other people in positions of power from trying out sponsorships in their own companies. Trying out new strategies or ideas in business rarely go perfect the on the first attempt, there are bumps in the road and failures more often than successes. But I still think sponsorship for women in construction is a valuable concept, just don't give up on it if you happen to hit a few snags on the way.

There is a difference and how it is handled in each company. But I feel that woman will still push no matter the snag we hit until we conquer

I didn't think about the difference of mentorship vs sponsorship that much but I feel there are more resources to help women in construction as it progresses.

I believe there are more and more examples of sponsorship every day in the workplace.
